Bob Jones University Betrays
Home School Families
Black Mountain, NC - The
Black Mountain Home School Academy is severing all business
relationships with Bob Jones University until the University President
reverses his public stand against flying the Confederate Flag over the
South Carolina Statehouse.
The Academy spends $500-$600 in home school supplies
and book sales for its 7 students aged 3 to 9. In a recent letter
to the State Newspaper of Columbia, South Carolina, Dr. Bob Jones III,
President of Bob Jones University declared support for the removal of a
Christian flag from the statehouse if the NAACP would first end its
boycott of South Carolina.
The Confederate Battle Flag is emblazoned with the
cross of the noble St Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland and one of
Christ's disciples. Some in the Southern home school movement believe
that the 13 stars in the Confederate Flag represent the 12 tribes of
Israel with Christ as the central 13th star. One would think that
the President of a Christian University would want to keep at least one
Christian flag over the capitol.
"We expect
this type of treatment from the enemies of Christ and liberty, not from
our 'friends'," said Mrs. Brenna Lyons, mother of 4 Academy students.
"We are not spending another penny at Bob Jones University until this
insult to the memory of the Confederate soldier is expunged," she added.
"I feel betrayed by this action," said Headmaster,
Dr. Neill H. Payne. How can I instruct my students to read from
materials supplied by an institution whose President publicly degrades
the sacrifices made by their Christian Confederate ancestors?
Payne added.
The Academy, though small, is in touch with over
60 home school families in the Buncombe County, North Carolina area, as
well as several Nationwide Home School Associations. They will all
be given the same message from their associates in Black Mountain: Do
not patronize Bob Jones University for Home School supplies until Dr.
Jones retracts his position on the banner of St Andrews cross over the
statehouse in South Carolina.
