Stone Mountain Confederate
Cemetery Flagpole Cut Down

SLRC Affiliate Attorney to Sue

 

Stone Mountain, GA - The Stone Mountain Memorial Camp recently bought several plots in the Stone Mountain Confederate Cemetery, and after ascertaining that there were no local ordinances to the contrary, place a large flagpole on the plots from which they planed to fly a Confederate Flag. The flagpole with a Confederate flag was to be dedicated at their memorial service tomorrow - at which SLRC Board of Advisors Chairman, H.K. Edgerton was to be the featured speaker.

 

In a move that has stunned people in and out of the Stone Mountain City Hall, the mayor (who is black) ordered that the flagpole be cut down, and at about 11:00AM today (the 25th), it was.

 

While the Stone Mountain Camp ponders its next move, the camp's attorney, SLRC affiliate Sam G. Dickson, is preparing a lawsuit with the help of Chief Trial Counsel, Kirk D. Lyons. "We're sending everything we have to Sam's office to help him prepare," said Lyons. "This outrage by the Mayor cannot go unanswered," Lyons added.

 

A section 1983 complaint is contemplated against the city, but if facts warrant it, a suit against the mayor in his individual capacity asking for punitive damages may be considered.
