Alcoa Union Votes Out Black
Anti-Confederate Union President
Black Mountain, NC - It
was reported to the SLRC staff by a member of the union at the Alcoa plant in Badin that yesterday, Union President Allen Williams was removed from office by a 52 - 21 vote. Williams was responsible for implementing the Confederate Flag ban at the plant back in June. Since June , protesters have carried Confederate Flags every day in front of Alcoa. An August 22 Confederate Flag rally attracted over 100 demonstrators. Demonstrators vowed to remain in front of the plant until the Alcoa ban on Confederate symbols is lifted.
It is apparent to the SLRC that the continuing
demonstration contributed to the resolve of union members in removing
Williams, who essentially betrayed fellow union members by providing tag
numbers off of cars of fellow union members with Confederate symbols to
his lawyer, who turned the info over to Alcoa. Williams has filed
a $10 million discrimination lawsuit against Alcoa.
