Confederate Activist Assaulted

Asheville, NC -  SLRC Board of Advisors Chairman H.K. Edgerton was assaulted and punched by a 15 year-old Asheville youth who was confronting him with two others.  H.K. was performing his daily vigil in front of Mission-St Joseph Hospital.  The Hospital system recently banned Confederate & Georgia flags from their construction sites.

HK was approached at 5:45 PM yesterday by the three black teenagers, who surrounded him and asked him what his sign said (Heritage not Hate). When H.K. tried to answer he was punched in the jaw. Hospital security intervened immediately.  Two of the boys scattered and the boy assaulting H.K. was spread eagled by Hospital security.  The Asheville police were called and the boy, 15 and a student Asheville High School, was threatened with a felony arrest.

H.K. insisted that the boy, spread eagled, crying and who had wet his pants, should not be arrested but returned to his Mother.  Reluctantly and after a stern warning to the boy, the police released him into his Mother's custody.

The SLRC believes this sets a very bad precedent for those members of the black community who seem to think that H.K. is a risk-free target of opportunity.  The SLRC notes that this is the second time in two years that this has happened. It is the position of the SLRC that the boy should have been arrested.  H.K. refuses to press charges.  The SLRC insists and H.K. has agreed, that the boy be ordered to participate in the hospital vigil after school with H.K. or other community service for a time at H.K.'s discretion OR then face arrest and prosecution.

The public vigil at Mission-St Joseph hospital by H.K. and others will continue.
