U.S. Supreme Court Asked to
Consider Confederate-Americans

Black Mountain, NC - The Board of Directors of the Southern Legal Resource Center announce that a petition for a Writ of Certiorari was filed with the clerk of the Supreme Court of the United States yesterday asking that Confederate-Americans be considered a legitimate group for national origin purposes under the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The Petition is brought to appeal a decision of the 4th Circuit US Court of Appeals upholding a dismissal of the lawsuit rendered in an Alexandria, Virginia Federal court.

The Petitioner, Don Curtis Terrill is an employee of the Department of Labor, who in 1998 applied to participate in a DOL sponsored Diversity Day celebration as a "Confederate American."  Terrill's participation was denied after consultation with the Secretary of Labor.  Terrill filed an EEOC Complaint that was denied and then filed a lawsuit in Federal court.

"Confederate-Americans meet every criteria for national origin status and we hope the justices will take up this very important civil rights issue," said Kirk D. Lyons Attorney for Don C. Terrill and Chief Trial Counsel of the SLRC.

The SLRC is non-profit, tax exempt, South Carolina public law firm that specializes in cases involving Southern Heritage violations.
