Stance Against Jefferson
Davis Statue - Not Attack Ads - Is What Hurt Lundsford, Jackson
According to Kentucky Division, SCV
Kentucky -
"Many Kentuckians are turned off by
candidates who think 'political correctness' is a real issue, and
candidates who are willing to sacrifice Kentucky history in a bid for
votes," said Don Shelton, spokesman for the Kentucky Division, Sons of
Confederate Veterans.
"Bruce Lunsford claimed that his negatives in the
polls went up after attack ads by Ben Chandler," Shelton continued, "but
he missed the point. Attack ads had been going on for weeks; it
was actually just after he claimed to be in favor of removing the
Jefferson Davis Statue - a story that was carried state-wide and even
nationally - that his negatives went up. As for Jackson, her
distant second finish in the other primary showed that she too lost
support after she came out in support of removing Jefferson Davis, or at
most it gained her nothing."
There is strong
evidence to support that theory. Four years ago Georgia Governor Roy
Barnes strong-armed a new Georgia state flag through the state
legislature to replace the one that prominently displayed the St.
Andrew's Cross, commonly known as the 'Confederate Flag'. Barnes
stated that voters would forget about it by the time he was up for
re-election. Instead Barnes was dogged constantly by flag
protestors, and in a stunning upset lost to Sonny Perdue last November.
All the research by pollsters in the wake of Barnes' defeat showed that
it was the flag issue that defeated him.
Voters are tired of political correctness and in
that case resentful of not being allowed to vote on the flag.
Barnes wasn't alone - many of the key legislators who pushed his flag
were also defeated. Also, he isn't the first governor to lose
re-election after thinking that attacking Southern heritage was a way to
gain support from special interest groups. Two South Carolina
governors were defeated after their efforts to remove the Confederate
Battle Flag from the South Carolina State House, and polls showed
similar voter disgust with their pursuit of political correctness.
In Mississippi, where voters were allowed to vote
on whether to eliminate their state flag, which also carries the St.
Andrew's Cross, they voted 66% in favor of keeping their flag -
including approximately 40% of African-American voters.
"Political correctness is actually a type of
tyranny," said Shelton, "that tries to disguise itself as something
positive. Voters don't want political correctness; they want true
leadership that addresses issues of real concern like education, taxes
and crime. Southern heritage and backlash against political
correctness are 'stealth issues' that many politicians and the media
don't seem to understand. However, the SCV was very heavily
involved in grass roots voter education in South Carolina, Georgia and
Mississippi when political correctness and anti-Southern prejudice
became an issue in those states. We will do the same in Kentucky
if gubernatorial or any other candidates make it an issue here."
The Sons of Confederate Veterans is a non-profit,
patriotic, historical and genealogical organization founded in 1896, and
consisting of male descendants of Confederate soldiers, sailors and
marines. The SCV has over 34,000 members worldwide, and in Kentucky
there are 28 local chapters called "camps."
