VA. SCV Reports Results of
Confederate History Month Poll

Richmond, VA - The Virginia Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans today will issue a poll taken on January 29 covering Confederate History and Heritage issues in Virginia and people's perceptions of these issues.  The poll was taken by Conquest Communications of Richmond.

We believe this is the first time such a professional poll has ever been taken on a statewide basis and it's findings are remarkable.  From Confederate History Month to monument protection to the battleflag to media bias, support for our issues are unwavering.

The most remarkable aspect of the poll is that 55% of those polled are transplants to Virginia.  These are people who are basically unschooled in Virginia's history and values.  Also, 35% of the poll was taken in Northern Virginia which would lead most reasonable people to see the poll results magnified in other areas of Virginia where heritage and history are much stronger.

In today's Washington Times, Attorney General Jerry Kilgore has vowed to have a Confederate History Month should he become Governor. Lt. Governor Kaine refuses to proclaim April as Confederate History Month.

Eighty-two percent (82%) of those polled feel that Confederate monuments and memorials need protection.  Fifty-five percent (55%) view the battleflag as a symbol of heritage, not racism.

These are numbers which cannot be ignored.  Statistics like these have been treated as landslides in Presidential elections.  Georgia and South Carolina have had Governors turned out of office based on the same type Confederate heritage issues which the poll represents.  Virginia should be no different if our issues continue to be ignored and censored.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans will demand Confederate history months at both the state and local levels.  We will seek to promote monument protection and improved public school education on Confederate history.  We will insist that we not be the victims of a double standard and that we be treated fairly.  We will hold our elected leaders accountable.  The Conquest poll demonstrates that the numbers are on our side, despite years of negativity by both the media and elected officials.  Virginians in large majorities support Confederate issues.
