Black Mountain, NC - Officials of the Southern Legal Resource Center will visit Augusta Thursday to investigate the removal of two Confederate flags from a public park and to demand their return.
The Southern Legal Resource Center is a law firm and legal referral service that advocates on behalf of Southerners whose civil and constitutional rights have been violated as a result of their culture, heritage or identity.
H. K. Edgerton, Chairman of the SLRC’s Board of Advisors, and Roger McCredie, the Center’s Executive Director, will confer with local citizens who want the City of Augusta to replace the two Second National Confederate flags they removed from historic flag displays at either end of Augusta’s RiverWalk. Mayor Bob Young caused the flags to be replaced with City of Augusta flags after the South Carolina NAACP, which is holding its convention this week at a nearby hotel, objected to their presence.
Edgerton and McCredie will hand deliver to Mayor Young’s office a letter demanding the flags’ return. They will be available to the media outside the Municipal Building at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Edgerton, a well-known Southern Heritage activist, is past President of the Asheville, NC, NAACP chapter. McCredie, who assumed his SLRC duties in August, is a past Chief of Heritage Defense of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
