SLRC Weekly Update

Dear Compatriots:

Greetings!  WOW- what a week.  I have a lot to share with everyone! Good news along with news of HK's March Across Dixie!  HK is doing well and is marching along so fast I can barely keep up with his progress!!

Bessinger Case

Kirk and I were in Columbia, South Carolina three days last week working on preparations for a court hearing in Maurice Bessinger's case against Bi-lo. Bi-lo filed a mammoth Motion to dismiss 3 months ago which the backstairs pundits frankly thought bi-lo would easily win. Glenn LaForce, lead attorney for Maurice Bessinger , argued his response to Bi-Lo's motion to Dismiss 11:00 a.m. today in a Lexington County South Carolina court before Judge Kenneth H. Goode.

LaForce made an outstanding presentation.  After hearing BiLo's and LaForce's arguments, Judge Kenneth Goode immediately denied BiLo's Motion to Dismiss and stated that this case would go to trial. Larry Salley, Chairman of the Board for the Southern Legal Resource Center, stated that the BiLo attorneys "looked like they had been hit upside the head with a frying pan."  The son of the senior judge in Lexington County was seated at counsel table for BilLo in an apparent not too subtle attempt by BiLo to influence the court's decision.

From a plaintiff's perspective attorneys sympathetic to Maurice considered today's victory a long shot because it is a case of first impression in South Carolina and there is no other case on point in the other forty-nine states or federal law.  Judge Goode is to be commended for following the law and not the dictates of corporate America.  In the coming months as the case works its way to trial, Maurice Bessinger will need your support and your prayers. The SLRC is proud to support a modern Confederate hero like Maurice Bessinger.  Help us so we can help him!

Lawrence County Schools

In an unexpected move attorneys for the Lawrence County School District filed an answer to our complaint rather than the usual ponderous mammoth motion to dismiss.  In light of our successful resolution of the Castorina case, we will be setting up an appointment to meet with the School Board's attorney and individual trustees to see if they would rather follow the law than pay our attorney's fees when we win. In any event we may now begin discovery in the case.  Stay tuned for further details!

Support HK via donations or by marching with him BUT DO SUPPORT HIM!  SCV members, has your division pledged to support HK?
