SLRC Weekly Update

Greetings Compatriots:

Hello to everyone. The SLRC has been very busy and my phone has been ringing off the hook with heritage violations being reported.  I even received a call from a young man in California, San Bernardino County. The California Division is working to get the ban overturned.

Meanwhile HK is trucking on towards Charleston.  He made his way to Columbia yesterday and I have included the daily reports of his journey this week.

Kirk and Brenna are in Austin, TX this weekend.  This afternoon they took part, along with other Texans, in the vigil outside of the Supreme Court building regarding the plaques case.

Depositions are scheduled for Richard Smith on next Friday, April 9th. We will keep everyone informed as the depositions are taking place.

DuPont

Things are still hot at DuPont.  Many people are becoming more involved with the bi-weekly vigil outside of the DuPont Spruance plant in Richmond, VA.  Plaintiff Jimmy Jones reports that the vigil is gaining momentum every week.  Every week, it seems as if more and more folks are participating and supporting the vigil.  Stay tuned….

HK has had a wonderful week on his March to the Sea.  HK has made his way to Columbia and is pushing on to Orangeburg.  Here is a synopsis of this week’s march for HK.

Day 13 - March to the Sea

MARCH 27, 2004
Little Mountain, SC to Ballentine, SC
15 Miles

Terry Lee came down to march with HK today and they began about 8:00.  Terry Lee said that many people stopped and talked to them.  They wanted to know what they were doing and why they were doing it. They marched down highway 76 till it intersected with highway 1 in Ballentine.  HK will be taking Monday off to get some things taken care of but he will resume marching on Tuesday right where he left off.  Y'all come on out!

Day 14 - March to the Sea

March 31, 2004
Ballentine, SC to Lexington, SC
15 Miles

HK had to take one day more than expected to take care of some business at home, but HK will be making up time!  HK and Terry Lee started out this morning at 7:00 am and were stopped by many folks and asked a lot of questions.  The Lexington Chronicle also interviewed HK. Many black folks wished him well today on the road and he said that the reception was off the scale.  Rusty Rentz from the Wade Hampton camp is putting HK up for the night in Lexington and lots of folks are going to supper with HK.  Tomorrow HK will be marching into Columbia and to the Capitol Building.  Y'all come on out and march with him towards Columbia!

Day 15 - March to the Sea

April 1, 2004
Lexington, SC to Columbia, SC
15 miles

The day started early once again for HK this morning-7 AM.  HK made his way to the capitol by 10:45 a.m. and luck would have it that a group of children were having a field trip today.  HK was as happy as could be and stayed busy taking pictures with kids and the teachers in front of tons of Confederate monuments.  HK was very pleased at the wonderful reception Columbia had for him.  He only had one negative comment but a white fellow that called him a traitor to his race.  HK quickly shot back, "What race are you talking about?  I imagine sir that you are just a yankee and you need to just go back from where you came sir!"  HK will start marching from the Riverside Inn tomorrow past Maurice Bessinger's Piggie Park and down Hwy. 21.  Come on out and join him!

It's funny how the local press in small towns will respond to our press releases and turn out to interview HK.  After all, how many times do YOU wake up in the morning and see a polite black gentleman walking down the street of your town carrying a Confederate flag - AND- carrying it all the way to Charleston, SC at that.

HK got good coverage in Spartanburg, Newberry and Lexington, but not a peep out of Columbia.  They are much too busy to cover an "inconsequential" story like that.  And heaven forbid that Confederates get a little positive coverage.  The Columbia media crowd have another day to cover the story, but don't hold your breath - we aren't.  In spite of the The State, Columbia Star and Free Times newspapers ignoring him, HK's march has been an unqualified success with the real people of South Carolina.
