SLRC Weekly Update

Greetings Compatriots:

Hello to everyone.  I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable week. When HK finishes marching tomorrow he will be about 7 miles outside of Charleston.  Today he stopped in Summerville after 15 miles and I have included this past week’s daily reports below.

Racist Food Products:

Richard Smith endured four hours of depositions today in Columbia. He did an excellent job of detailing the harassment he experienced regarding his "Confederate shrine" and the year's probation he received for wearing an SCV ballcap to work.  A representative from Bechtel was present to listen to Richard’s testimony.  More depositions will be following soon and we will keep you posted.

DuPont

Earlier this week we filed a notice of appeal for the sanctions imposed against Kirk and attorney’s fees assessed against the DuPont 7.  In addition to this, the Southern Legal Resource Center also filed a motion for sanctions against DuPont's North Carolina counsel in Buncombe County, North Carolina.  The reasoning behind us filing sanctions is because DuPont named the Southern Legal Resource Center when it filed its Notice of judgment in Buncombe County.  Judge  Hudson issued sanctions against Kirk Lyons only, not the SLRC.  Therefore, DuPont is being treated to the "goose-gander rule."

Day 17 - March to the Sea

Gaston, SC to just short of Orangeburg, SC
15 Miles

Today started early and Terry Lee came down to march with HK and brought his two children who marched as well. HK was greeted by many folks and got a lot of horn honking.  When the day was finished HK, Terry Lee and his children and some SCV members went and ate lunch at Maurice's.  They had a great time and great conversation!

HK will take Monday off of the march and will resume marching on Tuesday morning.

Tomorrow HK will be participating in a Confederate parade up in Richmond, VA.  Before leaving Richmond, HK will be sure to visit the DuPont Spruance plant in Richmond!

Day 18 - March to the Sea

Border of Orangeburg, SC to Border of Bowman, SC
A little over 15 Miles

HK began about 7:15 this morning and had Commander McCain from the Orangeburg camp waiting to march too.  Many guys from the Orangeburg camp marched with HK, including Dwight Bachman who marched all the way and Jay Wilkerson, new 13-year-old member of the camp who was very excited to march.  Terry Lee was with HK this morning along with his two children.  Many folks honked their horns and waved to all the marchers.  HK took Hwy. 178 from Orangeburg towards Bowman where he stopped today around noon.

The Orangeburg camp is taking HK out for supper tonight and putting him up in a hotel this evening in Orangeburg where the Time Democrat will be interviewing him.

Many thanks to Commander McCain and the Orangeburg camp for their hospitality.  Also thanks to the Orangeburg sheriff's department for looking after HK while in their town.

Day 19 - March to the Sea

Bowman, SC to just outside of Harleyville, SC
15 Miles

Today started out at the usual early time.  HK was accompanied by many SCV members from the Orangeburg, Branchville and St. George Sons of Confederate Veterans camps! HK said, "Today was excellent Allison! I  talked to a lot of people today and even had a news reporter from Charleston Channel 4 ABC named Nick Salvucci come and interview me."  The kind reporter told HK that the interview would air on tonight's news.  HK finished just outside of Harleyville near I-95 and Hwy. 178.

The Orangeburg Time and Democrat did a great story on HK and I have copied it below.  It appears that HK has broken through Columbia's media blackout!  So far the South Carolina, (with the exception of the great city of Columbia), press has done a surprisingly good job on covering HK's March to the Sea.

The St. George SCV camp is taking care of HK tonight.  HK will start out early tomorrow morning down Hwy. 178 where he will march through Harleyville and on toward Ridgeville.

Day 20 - March to the Sea

Edge of Harleyville, SC to Dorchester, SC
15 Miles

HK got started early around 6:45.  He was able to talk to a lot of black folks today and was really glad to.  He did an interview with the Dorchester newspaper and expects it to be a good article.

HK had a little lightning and rain but kept on going through.  Wayne from the St. George camp and Bob Murray's wife Heather and their two children were present with HK.  He had a really good time!  The Chief of Police bought HK lunch and had his picture made with him.  The Deputy Sheriff followed HK all day yesterday and all day today.  The Deputy Sheriff talked to folks all along the way and told people what HK was doing and told people what an honorable journey HK was on.  HK is very appreciative of the deputy sheriff and all he did.  HK also wants to thank the Charleston reporter Nick Salvucci for doing such a wonderful television interview yesterday!

HK is about two miles outside of Ridgeville and will be taking Hwy. 78 towards Charleston tomorrow.

Day 21 - March to the Sea

Dorchester, SC to Summerville, SC
15 Miles

HK got started early again this morning and had company at his early start.  Brigade Commander Bob Murray and Larry Simms marched all day today.  Commander Bob Murray called me this afternoon and said,"Wheeww, you don't know how out of shape you are until you try doing this."  I completely sympathized with him knowing full well that I couldn't have gone 5 miles, let along 15!

HK said that Summerville went wild when HK and everyone marched through.  "People were honking, yelling and cheering!"

The Summerville newspaper came out and interviewed HK.  The reporter from Channel 5 news did an interview with the NAACP president of Charleston and he called the Confederate battle flag a "terrorist flag."  The reporter wanted a response from HK.  HK got so upset at the president's response that he almost started talking about his momma!

HK made his way to Summerville is only 23 miles away from Charleston. HK will march on Saturday and then go home.  He will resume marching the final few miles into Charleston on Wednesday.
