SLRC UPDATE:
28 August 2004
SLRC Weekly Update
Greetings Compatriots:
It’s been a very busy week , both at the SLRC offices and for staff members on the road. Here’s what’s been happening:
H.K.Edgerton - Recent Activities
H.K. journeyed to Texas where he visited several sites, carrying a
Confederate flag as usual, and met with SCV Commnader-in-Chief Denne Sweeney and other officers. On his first day in Texas H.K. received a “criminal trespass warning ticket” from University of Texas security for standing
with a battle flag at the statue of Robert E. Lee on the UT campus. H.K.’s First Amendment rights were clearly violated and we are presently evaluating the best course of action to pursue against the University in this
matter.
The UT campus newspaper defended H.K. in an editorial and called for an
overhaul of the University’s “closed campus” policy. Other sites visited
were Hays High School in Buda, the Texas Supreme Court and Governor’s Mansion, the Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry and Ennis, Texas site of the recent Polka Festival that banned the Confederate flag.
Kirk Lyons - Recent Activities
Kirk went to Alabama to take client and defendant depositions in the
Lawrence County School Board case. He said he feels the case has an
excellent chance of going to trial, which in turn means we have an excellent chance of prevailing. Kirk came back by way of Memphis, where he conferred with SCV Army of Tennessee Commander Tarry Beasley about several
heritage violations in Shelby County schools.
Allison Schaum - Recent Activities
Allison also went to Alabama and additionally conferred with SCV
Tennessee Division Commander Ed Butler about an emerging heritage violation situation in the public schools in Clarksville, Tennessee.
(More to come on both these Tennessee situations as they develop.)
Roger McCredie - Recent Activities
Roger had a long and important first meeting with our management
consultants as a first step in laying out our three-year growth and
development plan. He gave an interview to USA Today, who wanted background on the Gettysburg protests, and also wrote a guest editorial rebuttal for Mountain Xpress of Asheville in response to the libelous article they
published by pro-sscv/SPLC reporter Jon Elliston. Betty delayed finishing her vacation in order to familiarize Roger with
the books and listen to him complain about budgets and cash flow. Only your continued financial support can keep us moving forward. Send in your donation today!
Coming up next week ...
Serious Bidness: Roger meets again with the management consultants and also finishes the grant application package for several charitable Foundations.
Joining the 21st Century
We get new computers and a revamped phone system, assuming everybody’s timetables dovetail.
Gettysburg
Plans are being finalized for the SLRC’s participation in the various observances to be held at Gettysburg next week in connection with artist John Sims’ anti-Confederate art exhibit and his intended “lynching” of a
Confederate flag. On Wednesday Sept. 1, H.K. will march from Chambersburg to Cashtown. Next day he will march from Cashtown into Gettysburg. Thursday evening there will be a candlelight vigil at the
gates of Gettysburg College. Roger will deliver opening remarks, then H.K. and others will read the complete roster of the Gettysburg dead, each name accompanied by the tolling of a bell. On Friday evening, Kirk will be a
featured speaker at the SCV-sponsored rally to be held at the Peace Monument on the battlefield.
If next week’s Update is a little late, it will be because everybody is
straggling back from Gettysburg. If you can’t be there in person, wish us
Godspeed.
