SLRC Weekly Update

Greetings Compatriots:

We at the SLRC hope everyone was spared the brunt of Hurricane Ivan last week. Here in Black Mountain we are still cleaning up, although power and water have been back to normal for several days.

The worst casualty was our own H.K. Edgerton.  During the storm last Thursday a week ago, H.K. lost part of his roofing, which caused torrential rains to pour into parts of his home.  Much of his furniture and furnishings in the affected areas was damaged beyond repair, along with most of H.K.'s clothes (his closet was ground zero).  Several of you have graciously asked where to send donations to help H.K., whose loss was not covered by insurance.  The quickest way to get aid to him is to send it to him care of the SLRC, Box 1235, Black Mountain, NC 28711.

Since the storm, H.K. has crashed several nights with his brother Terry Lee, and has also slept some in his van.  He was most upset because the water damage was heavy to his "Confederate Room" and ruined his collection of Confederate memorabilia including many of the awards and tokens of appreciation he has received from Southern Heritage groups over the years. "I can't replace those things," he said, "But I will always have the memory of getting them and of the dear friends who gave them to me."

Repairs to H.K.'s home are underway but will probably take several more weeks.

Heritage Violation at Augusta -- As y'all have probably heard, the City of Augusta caved in to pressure from the local NAACP and removed a Second National flag from the flag display along its River Walk, in anticipation of the Georgia State NAACP Convention in Augusta October 4-9.  Since the flag was an integral part of the display, the removal of it constitutes defacing a public monument, and this angle is being explored. Meanwhile at the SLRC we are planning to send our own (former) NAACP Representative -- H.K. -- and Executive Director Roger McCredie to Augusta for a press conference as the convention opens. Stay tuned.

Racist Food Case -- We will be in Aiken, SC, most of this coming week taking depositions in Richard Smith's case as that action begins to heat up. We'll keep you posted.
