Zappa, Bowling added to SLRC Board of Directors

BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC – Chapel Hill-based writer Ann Rives Zappa and attorney Bragdon Bowling of Richmond, VA  have been named to the Board of Directors of the Southern Legal Resource Center, Executive Director Roger McCredie announced Monday.

The new members are the latest additions in an overall plan to increase the Center’s board membership from its original five to 12.  Dixie Outfitters CEO Dewey Barber and Kentucky attorney R. Burl McCoy were added to the Board last fall.  Other members include Chairman Lourie A. Salley of Salley, SC, and Carl Barrington of Fayetteville, both attorneys; chiropractor Neill H. Payne of Black Mountain and SLRC Chief Trial Counsel Kirk Lyons.  Another founding Board member, attorney Larry Norman of Louisburg, NC, recently tendered his resignation from the Board in order to devote more time to private practice.  He has been named to an emeritus position on the Board and will continue to serve in an advisory capacity, McCredie said.

Ms. Zappa, a novelist, journalist and critic, is also a Confederate artillery reenactor and a long time patron of the SLRC.  Atty. Bowling has held several high ranking offices in the Sons of Confederate Veterans and took a leading part in exposing the fraudulent business dealings that infected the erection of the Lincoln statue at Tredegar National Historic Site in Richmond.

The new members have already begun their duties, McCredie said.

Limited number of reservations still available for SLRC Confederate Ball

BLACK MOUNTAIN,  NC – A limited number of reservations is still available for the Ninth Annual SLRC Confederate Ball, to be held this weekend at Black Mountain’s historic Monte Vista Hotel.

Former SLRC Executive Director Rick Wilkerson, President of the Ball Committee, says tickets for the ball, at $25 each or $50 per couple, will be available through Thursday, March 3 on a first-come basis.  Space and catering considerations cause the guest list to be limited to 80 persons, Wilkerson said.

The ball will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday evening, March 5.  Dress is period or modern formal dress.  Tickets include refreshments and all events of the evening including the traditional full plantation breakfast buffet at midnight.

Lodging is available at the Monte Vista and at several local bed/breakfast inns and motels.  For further information, call the SLRC office, (828) 669-5189.
