1997: William Wallace Lyons, age 5, salutes VMI Cadets in front of the Lee Chapel in Lexington, Virginia. VMI Cadets have a tradition of walking past the Lee Chapel on Sunday evenings in uniform. When they pass the door they salute and say "Good Evening General." As William stood in front of the Church door, he thought the Cadets were saluting him so he returned the salute.

August 2003: Stuart, Nathanael & William Lyons, sons of SLRC Chief Trial Counsel Kirk D. Lyons at the grave of their Confederate ancestor, Ganium S. Lyons (Co H 26th Alabama Inf) in the Brandon Cemetery in Brandon, Hill County, Texas.

August 2003, Mentone, Alabama: Counselors and Campers of the first ever Sam Davis Summer Boys Camp sponsored by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. SLRC gave a program on "Confederate symbols and the Public Schools."

June 2004, Spartanburg, South Carolina: Children of SLRC Case manager Allison Schaum march with H.K. Edgerton through Spartanburg, SC on his March to the Hunley Funeral.

April 2004, Russell High School in Russell,
Kentucky: Jacqueline Duty is a
senior at Russell High School in Russell, Kentucky. "I
designed and had made a Confederate Flag Dress to show a piece
of my heritage and to show what I stood for. When I showed up
at the prom I was turned away and told that I could/would be
suspended and that they would keep me from graduating if I did
not leave the school. My whole family and community are
outraged."

March 2006: Pictured above is Brittany Craig sporting a "Fly Me With Dignity, Not Bigotry" T-Shirt. Unbelievably, this shirt has been banned from her school. The shirt was purchased at a gas station called 'Dixieland' out of New Church, Virginia.

February 2007, Burleson, Texas: High School students Ashley Thomas and Aubrey McCallum with the purses they received as Christmas presents and brought to school. The school banned the purses, calling them “disruptive.” The girls and their families are suing the school district through the SLRC.

April 2007, Latta, South Carolina: High School student Candice Hardwick, who has waged a three-year battle to be allowed to wear Confederate-themed clothing items to school. Candice has been subjected to open hostility from teachers and administrators, received death threats from outside parties and endured harsh and arbitrary “discipline” at school, but has never wavered in her quest for justice. Her case comes before the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in October.
June 2007, Burleson Plaintiffs Graduate (as their case goes forward)

Ashley Thomas will be starting Tarrant Community College in the fall. She plans to take basic courses there before transferring to Texas Christian University , where she expects to major in Pre-Med. She has hopes of becoming a cosmetic surgeon.

Aubrey McCallum will enter Tarrant Community College in the fall. She has not yet declared a major but plans to transfer to a larger community college in the future. |
